Meet Chris

Christopher Carman (Chris) is the founder of Resonate Counseling Services. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) credentialed by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. Chris completed his Bachelor's (B.S. in Psychology at Towson University) in 2004 and received his Master's (M.S.) in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University in 2007. Chris is passionate about helping others overcome their personal barriers and achieve their full potential in life. 

He is an eclectic practitioner of psychotherapy and draws from the following orientations: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT,) Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT,) Existential Therapy, Humanistic Psychology, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Brainspotting (BSP.) He has worked in a variety of Mental Health settings ranging from community based rehabilitative programs, substance abuse treatment, outpatient mental health clinics to private psychotherapy practices.

Chris' Therapeutic Approach

Specialties: Depression, Anxiety, Life Transitions, Holistic Wellness, Spiritual Wellness, Substance Abuse, Brain Spotting, Nature Informed Therapy, Existential Issues and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Populations: Teens, Adults 18+. Chris loves working with individuals who are creative (e.g. artists, musicians, designers etc.) as well as individuals interested in spirituality and holistic wellness practices (e.g. yoga, meditation, plant based-diets etc.) Chris also loves to work with individuals in recovery from substance abuse or those working towards recovery. 

Chris' personal philosophy is that individuals CAN and DO recover from the challenges that prevent them from getting what they want out of life.  He is passionate about sharing this message with his clients and offers realistic strategies and coping skills that help them to manage difficult emotions and related stressors.

Using a non judgmental approach, Chris assists his clients in identifying the role they play in their struggles and offers support in overcoming these challenges. Chris teaches his clients techniques that increase their ability to engage in reality based thinking, rational decision making and other strategies that promote wellness and optimal functioning.

Chris integrates his academic background in philosophy with his clinical training to create a distinct style of psychotherapy that is engaging and thoughtful. A session with Chris may involve exploring themes from Existential Philosophy such as finding meaning in life, personal responsibility and freedom. Sessions with Chris may also echo concepts from Eastern Philosophies (such as Buddhism or Taoism) which adds a unique depth to the traditional psychotherapies that Chris offers.


Chris' clients describe his style as warm, empathetic, interactive and lively.

 
If you're looking for a therapist who will sit quietly, nod their head and occasionally say "Okay" or "Mmmhmmm" you've probably come to the wrong place. Chris loves to provide his clients with in-depth psychoeducation, coping skills and supportive feedback that helps them succeed. Chris is also a great listener and spends a great deal of time developing a deep understanding of where his clients are coming from.

In addition to creating a safe and therapeutic environment in his office, Chris incorporates humor, empathy, compassion, positive affirmations, supportive feedback and his genuine sense of caring for others into each session. His clients report that these factors significantly impact their progress and help them feel more comfortable when dealing with difficult issues during their work together.

Chris Outside of the Office

Outside of the office, Chris greatly appreciates all things musical and loves to play acoustic guitar and go to local music shows. He is an avid gardener and loves to cook delicious vegetarian foods using the vegetables he grows.

 

Chris enjoys spending time in nature and loves to hike or just relax outdoors. Following suit with his holistic tendencies in the therapy room, he integrates regular exercise and a healthy diet as part of his self-care and wellness practices.
