Mike's Therapeutic Approach

When working with couples, Mike primarily draws from the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT). This model integrates the latest findings in neuroscience, psychobiology, attachment theory, experiential therapy, and psychodrama. It is an in-depth approach that looks beneath the surface to identify core needs that may or may not be met. For example, a couple might argue about sex, but the underlying issue is often an unmet attachment need or a difference in what feels safe to each partner. Addressing these core needs is essential for meaningful change; otherwise, couples often find themselves repeating the same arguments for months, years, or even decades.

Mike has a particular interest in working with men’s issues. Many men are socialized to rely more heavily on thinking than feeling, which can make it difficult to access, identify, and express emotions—especially in close relationships. This often shows up as communication breakdowns, emotional disconnection, difficulty with vulnerability, or conflict in male-female relationships. Mike helps men develop greater emotional awareness, expand their capacity to express themselves authentically, and build stronger, more secure connections with partners.

When working with individuals who want to improve their dating life or strengthen an existing relationship, Mike applies these same principles. Using an attachment-based lens, he helps clients clarify what truly matters to them, understand their relational patterns, and develop a clearer sense of what a secure relationship looks like. From there, they are better able to show up authentically and make more intentional choices in relationships.

Mike also incorporates elements of somatic work into his practice, drawing from training in Somatic Experiencing. This approach is especially helpful for clients working through attachment or developmental trauma, where experiences are often held not just cognitively, but in the body. By increasing awareness of physical sensations and nervous system responses, clients can process unresolved experiences, reduce reactivity, and develop a greater sense of safety and regulation.

In addition, Mike is passionate about a holistic approach to therapy—one that incorporates the pillars of diet, exercise, sleep, and community. He has had the privilege of learning from Native American communities and healers in Mexico and Colombia, where he lived for a time. When working with individuals struggling with anxiety or depression, Mike integrates this broader perspective to support the “whole person.” When appropriate, he may also recommend collaboration with outside professionals such as trainers, dietitians, and other wellness providers.

Mike Outside of the Office
